July 12, 2004 was a very special night at the Montreux Jazz Festival for any blues fan. With Carlos Santana as musical director (and special guest guitarist), three musical legends took to the stage. Each one delivered a full concert set packed with some of the finest blues guitar playing you'll ever hear. Bobby Parker, the late Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, and Buddy Guy are all headline acts in their own right, so it was a real coup to get them on one lineup. In 1987, Grammy award winning superstar Carlos Santana and one of Jazz’s leading figures Wayne Shorter formed the Carlos Santana/Wayne Shorter Band, comprising of a range of musicians with hundreds of hit records between them. The following year they took the band on tour and played to sell out audiences all over the world. Their tour culminated in this legendary performance, recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1988 and captured here for the first time on DVD.
Lasting over two hours, Santana’s marathon performance at the 32nd Montreux Jazz Festival was considered to be the live performance of the year, and he was up against strong competition. Bob Dylan, Phil Collins, Buddy Guy and B.B. King, plus a reunion gig from Herbie Hancock and The Headhunters, represent just a handful of the stellar musicians who turned out to perform and entertain.
The DVD ‘Live In Montreux’ not only offers two hours of the very best from Santana and Shorter’s epic set, but also extras in the form of interviews with Santana, Shorter and Montreux Jazz Festival Director, Claude Nobs.
